This month we are taking a look at YWCA Nashville, an organization that helps families escape and recover from abusive households and relationships. In particular, the YWCA focuses on supporting women and girls as they strive to better their lives and become independent.
Their mission and vision statements make their purpose clear: “YWCA of Nashville & Middle Tennessee is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all…The YWCA will also be a spokesperson for those women who have no voice. Further, we will raise the awareness and diminish the incidence of violence and racism.”
From free GED® education for women and men, a domestic violence crisis line, mentoring programs for middle and elementary schools, camps, and other support programs, the YWCA is an amazing organization that we are proud to support.

This week, I was able to hear a member of YWCA Nashville’s Board speak as she visited Vox Grata women’s choir. Mary Jones, current owner and designer of AMAEZN Designs, escaped from an abusive marriage several years ago, and found refuge for her family with the YWCA. The support she received was life-changing, and Mary has dedicated herself to helping others like her though the YWCA.
Throughout the abuse and after her escape, Mary used poetry as a way to heal herself and find peace. She shared some of her pieces with Vox Grata, which were powerful, moving, and inspiring. We are all looking forward to reading the full collection after she is published!
